Berlin, NJ – The Cyprus Society of Greater Philadelphia “Makarios III” celebrated it’s 60th anniversary as an organization this past Saturday evening. The event featured traditional folk dancing, music from Cyprus and series of awards presentations.
Mrs. Joanna Savvides, past President of the Cyprus Society of Greater Philadelphia, was the mistress of ceremonies and kicked off the evening with a welcome at the podium during the cocktail hour.
Stelios Tsinontides Ph.D., the current President of Cyprus Society of Greater Philadelphia, introduced the many dignitaries and guests, including his Excellency, Ambassador Vasilios Philippou, Consul General of the Republic of Cyprus in New York.
Philippou and Tsinontides gave a short bio and introduction to the honored guest, Mr. Philip Christopher, President, PSEKA-Coordinating Committee for Justice for Cyprus. “I accept this award on behalf of you,” said Christopher as he pointed out into the filled room. “Because, year after year, you keep coming here, giving and believing in the Cyprus issue,” added Christopher. Christopher went on to thank many of those in the background of his work for his dedication and then honored those that had died.
His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey then presented an award on behalf of the Cyprus Society of Greater Philadelphia to Philip Christopher in honor of his years of dedication and work for Cyprus.
The 2016 graduated Student Awards followed and was presented by Maria Kasapis and Ambassador Philippou. Dancing performed by the Cypriot Dancers of Greater Philadelphia closed out the formal presentations.
