Valley Forge, PA. Epiphany Day observances took place yesterday, as Greek Orthodox communities around the world marked the occasion with church services and blessings of the water. The annual celebration commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.
In the Orthodox tradition, Epiphany — known as Theophany — is one of the most significant feast days of the year. It symbolizes the revelation of Christ as the Son of God and is closely tied to themes of renewal and blessing. The blessing of the waters, whether at a river, lake, or the sea, is a central part of the celebration.
The congregation of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church usually gathers along the shores of the Schuylkill River for this tradition. This year, inclement weather kept the service indoors.
