Philadelphia, PA – Anticipation continues to grow for the Greek Independence Day parade in Philadelphia, scheduled for March 22, 2015. Last nights meeting at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral by the Federation of Hellenic-American Societies of Philadelphia & Greater Delaware Valley had its member societies and organizations wrapping up details.

Following the reading of the minutes, it was straight to business-parade details. Stathis Karandonis, president of the Federation went through an extensive list with parade coordinator George Horiates. More floats, more additions to the parade and changes were announced.

Several organizations were added to the event, including the Philadelphia Greek Basketball League, who will march. The adult men’s basketball league is also a new member of the Federation. Running for the office as a judge in Philadelphia, Rainy Papademitriou dropped by and met the attendees and was invited to be part of the parade. Rainy’s long history within the Greek community of Philadelphia is well recognized. Running under the theme “She’s One of Us”, she discussed her platform at the meeting and asked for the Greek communities support.

The Independence Day parade has grown in recent years with an annual dance performance that has been added at the conclusion of the parade. That honor was given to the Pontian Akritai organization of Upper Darby. The Youth Dance troupe will perform traditional dances and features music played on the lyra, daouli and possible the aggio.
