Egg Harbor Twp, NJ – Anyway you slice it up, it’s a Gyro. Like synchronized swimmers, these parishioners continued cutting row after row of their famed beef and lamb gyro meat, while visitors poured into the campus and stood in the longer than usual lines. The Holy Trinity Greek Festival is hosted annually on the church grounds and attracts people from all over South Jersey.
“This festival has been hosted here for a very long time. I can remember coming here when they only had a dirt parking lot. But I loved it then as much as I do know”, said one neighborhood fan as she stood in line waiting to order. The great weather was probably responsible for the attendance this year. Families and friends gathered under a big white tent where a cafeteria style dinner was available. People of all ages sat together in rows of tables sampling the great food. Pastitsio, baked chicken, orzo, Greek-style potatoes and more were all being served. The food was prepared fresh and hot by the staff of parishioners that were donating their time to support their church.
Greek music, broadcasted live from Greece was playing on the PA system, and young parishioners danced in the church parking, adding to the atmosphere. The aromas and flavors were abundant from one end of the lot to the other. A loukoumades stand stood opposite the sweets stand, where a large group of ladies was working. You could crisscross the entire lot and explore a variety of Greek foods while shopping at the same time. Painting and trinkets of sorts where available as well. It’s been that way since the beginning. “The church was built and opened some 35 years ago”, said Father Liacopoulos. “And the festival has pretty much stayed the same,” added Liacopoulos.
The evening closed out with fireworks that launch the four-day festivities. If you are heading down the shore, it is a perfect place to catch an afternoon meal or bring the family for a day of fun. There’s plenty of free parking and games & rides for the kids as well.
