Philadelphia, PA – Members of the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia gathered in prayer at historic Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Philadelphia on Sunday, January 27, 2019, for their annual Artoklasia Service, celebrating the Feast Day of their Patron Saints, the Three Hierarchs – Saint Basil the Great, Saint Gregory the Theologian, and Saint John Chrysostom – and the Day of Greek Letters.

The theological and educational achievements of the Three Hierarchs, demonstrated through their Greek Orthodox faith, became an inspiration to many and an example of PAIDEIA (ΠΑΙΔΕΙΑ), the pursuit of education and continued learning, an integral part of the Hellenic culture and the ideal to which the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia is dedicated.

To that end, the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia offers events related to ΠΑΙΔΕΙΑ such as speaking programs, excursions, and scholarship opportunities to worthy undergraduate and graduate students with high academic achievement wishing to further their educational goals. This year, the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia is offering 17 undergraduate and graduate scholarships totaling $54,500. To date, the organization has awarded $749,500 in scholarship grants to 341 undergraduate and graduate students.

Following the service, Artoklasia Committee Chairman Panagiotis A. Chrisanthopoulos provided a brief presentation to the congregation on the history and mission of the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia. As is their tradition, the club sponsored the coffee hour as part of their celebration, during which members met with the congregation and students interested in learning more about the organization and its scholarship program.

The Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia offers several events throughout the year to promote ΠΑΙΔΕΙΑ. Upcoming events include an excursion to Queens in New York City for dinner in Astoria and a performance of Euripides’ Medea at the Queens Theater; a Spring Dinner-Dance in early May 2019, and the Scholarship Awards Dinner and Ceremony in late May 2019.
