Pennsauken, NJ – January 8, 2025 – The Federation of Hellenic Societies of Philadelphia and the Greater Delaware Valley hosted its annual Vasilopita dinner, a cherished tradition celebrating the New Year. This year’s event took place at the Atheras Center, home of the Pan Icarian Brotherhood’s Philadelphia chapter.
The evening began with a warm welcome from the Federation President, The Honorable Harry Karapalides, and the Federation’s officers. His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey presided over the evening, accompanied by clergy representing the 14 Greek Orthodox Churches in the Delaware Valley. Metropolitan Apostolos conducted the traditional blessing of the water service, offering his prayers and blessings to attendees, member societies, and the Atheras Center itself.
In his address, Metropolitan Apostolos conveyed a message of hope and health, encouraging unity among the Hellenic community across the region. The Metropolitan also highlighted the importance of the Federation’s works in promoting faith, culture, and service.
Following a festive dinner, Metropolitan Apostolos performed the ceremonial cutting and sharing of the vasilopita, personally distributing pieces to every attendee. Judge Harry Karapalides thanked His Eminence for his continued support and recognized the significance of the Philadelphia Greek Independence Parade, scheduled for April 6. “The Parade remains the largest in the Metropolis and one of the best in the nation,” he noted.
George Horiates, past Supreme President of AHEPA and the Pan Icarian Brotherhood, congratulated His Eminence on behalf of all present as he approaches the 10th anniversary of his ordination on January 13. Georgia Chletcos, Chair of the Federation’s Board of Trustees, also addressed the gathering, expressing her appreciation for the collaboration between the Metropolis, the societies, and the broader community. She previewed a vibrant calendar of events for 2025, including upcoming society dances, the Metropolis Youth Festival in February, and other significant occasions culminating in the spring Parade.
The evening underscored the community spirit and the Federation’s commitment to preserving Hellenic traditions, fostering connections, and celebrating faith and culture. As the year unfolds, the Delaware Valley’s Greek-American community looks forward to a robust schedule of events that reflect their shared heritage and unity.
