Philadelphia, PA – The Evangelismos Greek School (Bustleton ave.) commemorated Greek Independence day at their church on Bustleton Avenue. Although Evangelismos church is one of the smallest parishes in the Delaware Valley, they put on one of the biggest events, honoring those that gave Greece its freedom in the war of Independence, recognized March 25th 1821.
While families looked on, the Greek school students, performed traditional poems,songs and even added in a bit of theatre-all in Greek. Evangelismos community’s ties to traditional Greek are very evident. This community is primarily attended by immigrants and 1st generation Greeks making it arguable the most authentic Greek community in Philadelphia today. Daily life around this community is conducted primarily in Greek 1st and English second.
Evangelismos Greek Orthodox church-Greek School is a k through 7th grade program with more than 75 students attending. Classes are hosted on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. Tuesdays classes focus on language, while Friday’s on the many various traditional Greek dances from throughout the country.
